Seals Urges House to Pass Resolution Honoring Israel on 60th Anniversary Year
April 22, 2008
DEERFIELD—Today, Congressional Candidate Dan Seals urged the House to pass H.Con.Res. 322, a bi-partisan resolution recognizing the 60th anniversary of the re-establishment of the State of Israel. Seals noted that despite being under attack since its re-birth, Israel’s accomplishments have been a source of pride to everyone who values freedom and democracy, as Israel is the only true democracy in the Middle East, has a higher ratio of university degrees to its population than any country in the world, and has been a global leader in technological innovation.
“Although under constant attack, Israel has not sunk to the level of its enemies and has fought for peace at every opportunity,” Seals said. “Israel has offered to return land won in defensive wars only to have its peace overtures rejected by enemies whose true aim is not the creation of yet another Arab state, but the destruction of the world’s only Jewish state. By standing firmly with Israel, the United States puts the world on notice that Israel is here to stay, and that peace, not war, is the only ultimate answer.”
Among the many values Israel shares with the United States is that Israel is the only country besides the United States that observes Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. King was a strong friend of Israel, and he understood the motivation of those who would seek to divide the United States and Israel. As Dr. King himself said, “When people criticize Zionists they mean Jews; you are talking anti-Semitism.” Just as King marched with Abraham Joshua Heschel, Seals said that the U.S. must also march with Israel in its struggle for peace.
“Zionism, quite simply, means the right of the Jewish people to live securely in their homeland as independent people,” Seals said. “As we celebrate the 60th anniversary of Israel’s re-establishment, all of us are Zionists, and we must all—Democrats and Republicans, liberals and conservatives—work together to ensure that the U.S.-Israel relationship remains strong and vibrant, now and forever.”
