Kirk Sides With Bush Administration Over Homebuyers

Seals Denounces Kirk Vote, Emphasizes Support for Helping First-Time Homebuyers

May 13, 2008

DEERFIELD—Thursday, Rep. Mark Kirk cast his lot with President Bush and House Republican leadership over working and middle class families by voting against the Housing Assistance Tax Act, which would provide a refundable $7,500 to first time homebuyers and offer tax relief to non-itemizers by increasing the standard deduction for property taxes. The bill passed with broad bipartisan support by a vote of 322 to 94. [HR 3221, House Vote 302, 5/8/08]

Democratic Congressional Candidate Dan Seals released the following statement on Kirk’s vote:

“Homeownership is central to achieving the American dream. This bill offers the help that many families in the 10th district could use when buying their first home.

“Once again, Mark Kirk is siding with the Bush administration over the needs of his constituents. At a time when our families are finding it harder than ever to make ends meet, Kirk is turning his back on expanding the dream of homeownership.”
