Kirk Sides With Bush Administration Against Troop Withdrawal
Seals Pledges First Priority Will Be Changing Course In Iraq
May 16, 2008
DEERFIELD—Yesterday, by refusing to take a stand on funding for the war in Iraq and voting for the 9th time in the last year against a timetable for withdrawal, Rep. Mark Kirk showed once again why he is unfit to represent the 10th district in Congress. Despite the thousands of lives lost, hundreds of billions of dollars appropriated, and 5-plus years spent on the war in Iraq, Kirk continues to stand with President Bush’s failed Iraq war policy over the wishes of his constituents. .
“Once again, Mark Kirk is siding with the Bush administration and its desire to have an open-ended engagement in Iraq,” Seals said. “The 10th district deserves better from their representative. I’m running for Congress to side with our troops, who have been overstretched, and our national security, which has been compromised by our engagement in Iraq.”
Rather than take an up or down vote on funding the war, Kirk desperately tried to hide from his close ties to the Bush administration’s failed and endless Iraq war policy by voting “present.” Kirk’s vote continues his troubling history of playing politics on the war in Iraq. In May 2007, the Chicago Tribune reported that Kirk visited the White House to “deliver what one participant called a 'strong signal' about the electoral dangers that 'war fatigue and war weariness' pose for Republicans in 2008.”
“Leadership is about standing up for what is right, asking the tough questions, and demanding accountability,” Seals said. “Mark Kirk has failed the 10th district on all three counts when it comes to the war in Iraq. I will fight to bring the change we need to Washington by voting to bring our troops home responsibly, strengthen our military, and refocus on the global threats facing our country.”
